Find the median of data 24,36,30,15,17,18,25,36.

To do: Find the median of data 24,36,30,15,17,18,25,36

Solution:

Arrange the numbers in ascending order,

$15 , 17 , 18 , 24 , 25 , 30 , 36 , 36$

Count the number of terms(n),

$n  =  8$

'n' is even number. use the following formula

Now,

  • Find value at position $\frac{n}{2}$
  • Find value at position $\frac{n}{2} + 1$
  • Find the average of two values to get the median.

$\frac{n}{2}  =  \frac{8}{2}  =  4$

The value at the fourth position from the ordered data = 24

$\frac{n}{2}  + 1  =  \frac{8}{2} + 1  = 4 + 1 = 5$

The value at the fifth position from the ordered data = 25

The average of two values  =  $\frac{24 + 25}{ 2}$

                                                  = $\frac{ 49}{ 2}$

                                                  =$  24.5$

Median of the given values is  24.5
