Find the mean proportion of the following numbers:
36 and 49.
Given :
The given numbers are 36 and 49.
To do :
We have to find the mean proportion of the given numbers.
Solution :
Let the mean proportion of 36 and 49 be x
This implies,
36, x, and 49 are in continued proportion.
Therefore,
$\frac{36}{x} =\frac{x}{49}$
$36\times 49=x\times x$
$36( 50-1) =x^{2}$
$x^{2} =36\times 50-36\times 1$
$x^{2} =1800-36$
$x^{2} =1764$
$x=\sqrt{1764}$
$x=42$
The mean proportion between 36 and 49 is 42.
