Solution:


a) Numerator 9

$9 \times 4  =  36$

$12  \times 4 = 48$

$\frac{36}{48} = \frac{9 \times 4  }{ 12 \times 4}$

$\frac{36}{ 48}  = \frac{ 9 }{ 12}$                                   [cancel 4 ]

b) Denominator 4

$12 \times 3 = 36$

$12 \times 4  = 48$

$\frac{36 }{48} = \frac{12 \times 3}{ 12 \times 4}$                       [cancel 12]

$\frac{36}{ 48}   =  \frac{3}{ 4}$
