Fill in the names of useful items made from jute fibres in Fig. 3.1. One such example is given.
Jute fibres are natural plant fibres. These are extracted from the outer part of the bark of Jute plant. These are shiny, long, soft, bast fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads.
The process of extraction of jute fibres from the jute plant is given below:
- The fibres are first extracted by retting. The retting process consists of bundling jute stems together and immersing them in slow-running water.
- There are two types of retting: stem and ribbon.
- After the retting process, stripping begins; women and children usually do this job. In the stripping process, non-fibrous matter is scraped off, then the workers dig in and grab the fibres from within the jute stem. These fibres are used to make further products.
LOCATION:
West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam are the states where jute plants are mainly grown in India.
USES:
Jute is mainly used for the preparation of sacks, coarse cloth, and making cloth for wrapping bales of raw cotton. These fibers can also be woven into curtains, chair covering cloth, rugs, and carpets, and linoleum backings.
Jute fiber is usually used alone, but it can be blended with other types of fiber to prepare twine or rope.
