Resistance is measured in ___________. The resistance of the wire increases as the length ________; as the temperature ________; and as the cross sectional area _________.
Resistance is measured in ohm (Ω). The resistance of a wire increases as the length increases; as the temperature increases; and as the cross-sectional area decreases.
Explanation
The resistance of a conductor is affected by the following factors:-
1. Length of the conductor - As the length of conductor increases, resistance also increases, and as the length decreases resistance also decreases.
2. Temperature of the conductor - On increasing the temperature, the resistance of conductor (all pure metal) increases, and decreases on lowering the temperature.
3. Area of cross-section of the conductor (or thickness of the conductor) - The resistance of a conductor is inversely proportional to its area of cross-section. When the area of cross-section of a conductor (wire) increases, its resistance decreases, and when the area of cross-section of a conductor (wire) is decreased, then its resistance get increased.
4. Nature of the material of the conductor - Some materials have low resistance and some have high.
For example- Copper & Nichrome alloy.
The resistance of nichrome wire is about 60 times more than that of the copper wire.
