Explain the process of making yarn from fiber.
Yarns are made up of thin strands called fibres. The process of making yarn from fibres is called spinning. In this process, a mass of cotton wool is drawn out and twisted. This brings the fibres together to form yarn.
A spinning wheel can be used for this purpose. It is a device for spinning thread or yarn from fibres.
Yarn can be of different types according to their structure:
- A single yarn is produced by twisting staple fibers together.
- A ply yarn is produced by twisting two or more single yarns together.
- A cord yarn is produced by twisting two or more ply or folded yarn.
The process of making of fabric can be written as the following:
fibre → yarn → fabric.
The process of converting fibre into fabric involves spinning and weaving or knitting.
Spinning is the process of making yarn from fibres. Spinning was traditionally done in India on a hand spindle (taklu) or on a spinning wheel (charkha), but now machines are used.
