Explain the process of separation of sand that is mixed with water.
It is easy to separate sand and water by filtering the mixture.
Filtration is a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid. Filter paper is a semi-permeable paper barrier placed perpendicular to a liquid or airflow. It is used to separate fine substances from liquids. This can be used to remove sand from water. The sand stays behind in the filter paper (it becomes the residue ) the water passes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate ).
Alternate method: Sedimentation and Decantation
Sedimentation- Sedimentation is the process in which heavier particles of an insoluble solid settle down in a liquid.
As sand is insoluble in water, it will settle down in the liquid.
Decantation- is the process of pouring out the liquid without disturbing the sediment.
Water can be removed from sand which is settled in the bottom of a beaker by pouring it out from the mixture.
