Explain ratio and proportion with example.
Ratio:
The ratio is used to compare two numbers. It can be calculated by simply dividing one number with another.
For example, if there are 4 oranges and 4 apples in a bowl of fruit, then the ratio of oranges to apples is 4 to 3.
We can represent it as 4 : 3
It simply means you have $\frac{4}{3}$ times as many oranges as apples.
Proportion:
A proportion is simply a statement that two ratios are equal.
It can be written in two ways:
as two equal fractions $\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}$; or using a colon, a:b = c:d. 'a' and 'd' are known as extremes and 'b' and 'c' are known as means
For example,
$3:2 = 6:4$
Proportion Rule: Product of extremes $=$ Product of means.
In $\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}$, we get ad $=$ bc.
