Explain life cycle of butterfly.

There are four stages in the metamorphosis of butterflies such as egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

  1. Eggs are laid on plant leaves by the adult female butterfly. The leaf becomes the food for the hatching caterpillars.
  2. The next stage is the larva which is also called as caterpillar. The caterpillar feed on the plant leaves. It grows, splits its skin, and sheds it 4 or 5 times.
  3. The fully grown caterpillar stops eating and a pupa. The pupal stage can last from a few weeks to months. Inside pupa the caterpillar changes rapidly. The cells grow into body parts such as legs, wings, eyes and other.
  4. In the adult stage the butterfly emerges from the pupa. The adult butterfly has long legs, long antennae, compound eyes, and large colorful wings.
