Draw the graph of $y = \mid x \mid$.
Given:
$y = \mid x \mid$.
To do:
We have to draw the graph of $y = \mid x \mid$.
Solution:
We know that,
$\mid x \mid = x$ if $x>0$
$=0$ if $x=0$
$=-x$ if $x
To represent the above equation graphically we need at least two solutions for the given equation.
$y=x$
If $y=0$, then $x=0$
If $y=1$, then $x=1$
If $y=-1$, then $x=-1$
$x$ | $0$ | $-1$ | $1$ |
$y$ | $0$ | $-1$ | $1$ |
Plot the points $(0, 0), (-1, -1)$ and $(1, 1)$ on the graph and join them to get the graph of the given equation.
The above situation can be plotted graphically as below:
