Does sodium react with water?
Sodium reacts with water rapidly to form a colourless solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2). The resulting solution is basic because of the dissolved hydroxide.
During this reaction, the sodium metal catches fire because of heat generated and burns with a characteristic orange flame.
The balanced chemical equation is given as:- 2Na (s) + 2H2O (l) → 2NaOH (l) + H2 (g).
