Describe a test for carboxylic acids.
Carboxylic acids react with sodium bicarbonate and produce sodium ethanoate and water along with carbon dioxide, which gives brisk effervescence in the reaction mixture. This reaction is used as a test for the presence of carboxylic acids.
The equation for the above reaction is given below:
$CH_3COOH + NaHCO_3 →CH_3COONa + CO_2 + H_2O$
