Calculate the median from the following data:
Marks below:1020304050607080
No. of students:1535608496127198250

To do:

We have to find the median from the given data.

Solution:

Here,

$N = 250$

$\frac{N}{2} = \frac{250}{2} = 125$

The cumulative frequency just greater than $\frac{N}{2}$ is 127 and the corresponding class is 50 – 60.

This implies, 50 – 60 is the median class.

Therefore,

$l = 50, f = 31, F = 96$ and $h = (60 - 50) = 10$

Medain $=\mathrm{l}+\frac{\frac{\mathrm{N}}{2}-\mathrm{F}}{\mathrm{f}} \times \mathrm{h}$

$=50+\frac{125-96}{31} \times 10$

$=50+\frac{29}{31} \times 10$

$=50+9.35$

$= 59.35$

The median of the given data is 59.35.
