Calculate the kinetic energy of a car of mass 854 kg moving with a velocity of 54 km per hour. Find the new kinetic energy of the car if a passenger of mass 50 kg sits in the car?
Given, the mass of the car = 854 kg
The velocity of the car =54km/h.
We know that, kinetic energy = $\frac{1}{2} mv^{2}$
=> kinetic energy = $\frac{1}{2} \times 854\times 54^{2} =\ 1245132\ joule$
Therefore the kinetic energy of a car of mass 854 kg traveling with a speed of 54km/h is 1245132 joule.
When a person of 50 kg sat in the car the total mass = car mass + person's mass = 854 + 50 = 904kg.
Now, kinetic energy = $\frac{1}{2} mv^{2}$ = $\frac{1}{2} \times 904\times 54^{2} =\ 1318032\ joule$
Hence the kinetic after a person sat in the car is 1318032 joules.
