(a) Write down an equation that defines density.
(b) $5\ kg$ of material A occupy $20\ cm^3$ whereas $20\ kg$ of material B occupy $90\ cm^3$. Which has the greater density : A or B ? Support your answer with calculations.
(a). Equation of density:
The mass per unit volume is called the density of a substance.
$\boxed{density=\frac{mass}{volume}}$
(b). Mass of the material $m_A=5\ kg=5\times1000\ g=5000\ g$
Volume occupied $V_A=20\ cm^3$
Therefore, density of material 'A' $=\frac{mass}{volume}$
$=\frac{5000\ g}{20\ cm^3}$
$=250\ g/cm^3$
For material 'B':
Mass $m_B=20\ kg=20\times1000\ g=20000\ g$
Volume $V_B=90\ cm^3$
Therefore, the density of volume 'B' $=\frac{20000\ g}{90\ cm^3}$
$=222.22\ g/cm^3$
Thus, material 'A' has a greater density.
