(a) Define friction. What are the factors affecting friction? Explain with examples.
(b) What is the cause of friction? Explain with the help of a labelled diagram.
(a). Friction: Friction is a force that opposes the motion of any object. It acts between the two surfaces of objects in the opposite direction of the motion.
Factors affecting friction:
1. friction depends on the nature of the surfaces of the contacting objects. On rough surfaces friction is very high while on smoother surfaces friction is very low.
2. Friction depends on the weight of the objects. A surface offers large friction to a heavier object moving on it as compared to a lighter object moving on the same surface.
(b). Cause of friction:
Roughness and adhesion of the surface is the cause of friction between the surfaces of two objects.
