(a) Compare the properties of solids, liquids, and gases in tabular form.(b) Give two reasons for saying that wood is a solid.
(a) Comparative study of the properties of solids, liquids, and gases is given below:
Solid | Liquid | Gas |
Solids have a definite shape and volume. | Liquids have fixed volume but take the shape of the container in which it is kept. | Gases have neither a fixed shape nor fixed volume. |
It cannot be compressed. | It cannot be compressed much. | It can be compressed easily. |
It has a high density. | Its density is moderate to high. | It has a very low density. |
The force of attraction (intermolecular) between the particles is very strong. | The intermolecular force of attraction is weaker than solids. | The intermolecular force of attraction is the weakest. |
The space between the particles (intermolecular) of solids is negligible. | They have considerable intermolecular space between the particles. | The intermolecular space between gas particles is large. |
(b) Wood is solid because it has a fixed shape and volume, and it is rigid and cannot be compressed.
