1. What do you understand by an alloy?

2. What is the need for the separation of components of a mixture?

3. What do you understand by threshing? How is common salt obtained from seawater?

4. How do we separate impurities and bran from flour? Why?

5. How are molecules classified? Give an example of each type.

6. How can you separate a mixture of iron filings and common salt? Explain.

7. How will you separate sugar from a mixture of sugar and water?

1. An Alloy is a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion.

The example includes: Magnalium is an aluminium alloy with 5% magnesium and 95% aluminium. Red gold is an alloy of gold and copper.etc.

2. When two or more substances are mixed together they form a mixture. Components of a mixture should be separated because some components may not be useful or may spoil the useful component of the mixture.

3. Threshing is the process of loosening the edible part of the grain (or other crops) from the chaff to which it is attached.

  • It is the step in grain preparation after reaping.

  • It is the process in which stems of wheat or paddy are beaten to separate grains from the stems and from the chaff that cover the grains.

4. On Evaporating seawater (salty), we get common salts which we use in our food.

  • Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapour. Evaporation is the primary pathway that water moves from the liquid state back into the water cycle as atmospheric water vapour.

  • Evaporation is used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid.

5. We can separate impurities and bran from flour by Sieving.

  • Sieving is a method in which fine particles are sieved through holes of the sieve while the bigger impurities remain on the sieve.

  • The Sieve has minute holes in it to allow the passage of small substances, in this case, flour is passed through and the impurities and bran remain on top of the sieve.

6. We can separate the mixture of iron filings and common salt by the use of magnets. Iron filings will be attracted to magnets and will stick to it and hence can be separated in this way.

7. We can separate sugar from a mixture of sugar and water by Evaporation.

On heating the mixture, water will evaporate and sugar crystal will remain in the bottom of the pan.
