Assuming the earth to be a sphere of radius $6370\ km$, how many square kilometres is area of the land, if three-fourth of the earth’s surface is covered by water?
Given:
The radius of the earth is $6370\ km$.
Three-fourth of the earth’s surface is covered by water.
To do:
We have to find the area of the land.
Solution:
Radius of the earth $= 6370\ km$
Water on the earth $=\frac{3}{4}$(total area of the earth)
This implies,
Land on the earth $=\frac{3}{4}$(total area of the earth)
Therefore,
Required area $=\frac{1}{4}(4 \pi r^{2})$
$=\pi r^{2}$
$=\frac{22}{7} \times(6370)^{2}$
$=\frac{22 \times 6370 \times 6370}{7}$
$=22 \times 910 \times 6310$
$=127527400 \mathrm{~km}^{2}$
