Activity : Note the frequency of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers going past during a time interval, in front of your school gate. Find the probability that any one vehicle out of the total vehicles you have observed is a two-wheeler.
To do:
We have to find the probability that any one vehicle out of the total vehicles you have observed is a two-wheeler.
Solution:
After observing two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers going past during $8:00$ to $9:00$ AM, in front of the school gate, we get the following data:
Type of vehicle | Frequency |
Two wheelers | 500 |
Three wheelers | 200 |
Four wheelers | 100 |
Therefore,
Total number of vehicles $= 500 + 200 + 100$
$= 800$
Number of two wheelers observed $= 500$
Therefore,
The probability of observing two wheelers $= \frac{500}{800}$
$= \frac{5}{8}$
