A solid metal bar of volume 8.4 m3 is melted and recast into smaller bars each of volume 0.07m3 . How

many such smaller bars are formed?


Given: A solid metal bar of volume 8.4 m3 is melted and recast into smaller bars each of volume 0.07m3  

To do: Find how many smaller bars can be formed


Solution: Volume of big metal bar  =  8.4 m 

Volume of  small bar  =  0.07 m3   

Number of small bars =$\frac{ Volume \ of \ big \ metal \ bar}{Volume \ of \ small \ bar}$

Number of small bars = $\frac{ 8.4}{ 0.07}$

8.4 can be written as $ \frac{84}{10 }$                      [point is after one number from right end, so

divide by 10]

0.07 can be written as $\frac{7}{100}$                    [point is after two numbers from right end, so divide by 100]

Number of small bars =  $\frac{84}{10} \div \frac{7}{100}$

 $\frac{7}{100}$ becomes $\frac{100}{7}$

$\frac{84}{10} \times \frac{100}{7}$                                   [ $10 \times 10  = 100 ; 12 \times 7 = 84$]

$12 \times 10  =  120$


Therefore ,number of small bars = 120
