A ship sails due east 30 kilometre and then due south for 16 kilometre. How far in a direct line is it from the starting point?
Given:
A ship sails due east 30 kilometre and then due south for 16 kilometre.
To do:
Here we have to find the distance of the ship from the starting point.
Solution:
The path of the ship can be depicted as below:
As the ship travels in a straight path and turns at the angle of 90°, by Pythagoras theorem,
$AB^2+BC^2=AC^2$
$(30)^2+(16)^2=AC^2$
$900+256=AC^2$
$AC^2=1156$
$AC=\sqrt{1156}$
$AC=34\ km$
Therefore, the ship is 34 km from the starting point.
