A shiny brown coloured element ‘X’ on heating in the air becomes black in colour. Name the element ‘X’ and the black coloured compound formed.

Element ‘X’ is copper (Cu).
The black-coloured compound is copper oxide (CuO). The reaction involved is
$2Cu(s) + O_2 (g) → 2CuO(s)$
This is type of reaction is known as a combination reaction. As Copper becomes copper oxide by burning in the air (oxygen), it can also be known as an Oxidation reaction.

Combination reaction also known as a synthesis reaction is a reaction where two or more elements or compounds (reactants) combine to form a single compound (product).

It may be presented in the following form A + B --> AB.

eg: H2 + Cl2 --> 2HCl

         REACTANT 1       +        REACTANT 2              ----->                               PRODUCT

Oxidation reaction is one, where an element is burnt in the presence of air or a reaction takes place when exposed to air. Example: rusting of iron is an oxidation reaction.
