A rectangular park is surrounded by a path that is $2.5m$ wide. If the length and breadth of the park are $20 m$ and $15 m$ respectively, find the area of the path.

Given: A rectangular park of dimensions $20m\times 15m$ surrounded by a path of width $2.5 m$

To find: The area of the path

Solution:

The dimensions of the outer rectangle including the path = $(20 + 5)m \times (15 + 5) m$

= $25 m \times 20 m$

Area of the outer rectangle = $25 m \times 20 m$ = $500 m^2$

Area of rectangle inside path = $20m \times 15m$ = $300m^2$

So area of path = Area of outer rectangle - Area of inner rectangle = $500m^2 - 300m^2$

= $200m^2$

So the area of path = $200 m ^2$
