A man throws a ball weighing 500 g vertically upwards with a speed of 10 m/s.
(i) What will be its initial momentum?
(ii) What would be its momentum at the highest point of its flight?
(i). Mass of the ball $m=500\ g=0.5\ kg$
Initial velocity of the ball $v_1=10\ m/s$
therefore, initial momentum $P_1=mv_1$
$=0.5\ kg\times10\ m/s$
$=5\ kg-m/s$
Therefore, the initial momentum of the ball is $5\ kg-m/s$.
(ii). At the highest point, its velocity will be zero.
$v_2=0$
So the momentum of the ball at its highest point $P_2=mv_2=0$
