A man goes 10 m due south and then 24 m due west. How far is he from the starting point?
Given: A man goes 10 m due south and then 24 m due west.
To find: Here we have to find the distance of the man from starting point.
Solution:
Assume the path traveled by the man as a triangle.
As the man travels in a straight path and turns at the angle of 90°, by Pythagoras theorem,
AC2 = AB2 + BC2
AC2 = 242 + 102 m
AC2 = 576 + 100 m
AC2 = 676 m
AC = $\sqrt{676}$ m
AC = 26 m
So, the man is 26 m from the starting point.
