A man buys 5 dozen eggs at rupees 36 per dozen. Out of which 5% got broken. He sold the remaining eggs for rupees 48 per dozen. What was his total gain?
Given:
Cost price of 5 dozen eggs = Rs. 36 per dozen
Out of 5 dozen eggs 5% got broken.
Selling price of remaining eggs = Rs. 48 per dozen
To find: Here we have to find the total gain of the man.
Solution:
Cost price of 1 dozen eggs = Rs. 36
Cost price of 5 dozen eggs = Rs. 36 $\times$ 5
Cost price of 5 dozen eggs = Rs. 180
Now,
Number of eggs in 1 dozen = 12
Number of eggs in 5 dozen = 12 $\times$ 5
Number of eggs in 5 dozen = 60
Out of 60 eggs 5% got broken:
5% of 60 eggs = $60\ \times \ \frac{5}{100}$
5% of 60 eggs = 3
So,
Remaining number of eggs = 60 - 3 = 57
12 eggs = 1 dozen
57 eggs = $\frac{57}{12}$ dozens
Selling price of 1 dozen eggs = Rs. 48
Selling price of $\frac{57}{12}$ dozen eggs = Rs. 48 $\times \ \frac{57}{12}$
Selling price of $\frac{57}{12}$ dozen eggs = Rs. 4 $\times $ 57
Selling price of $\frac{57}{12}$ dozen eggs = Rs. 228
We know that:
Gain = Selling price $-$ Cost price
Gain = Rs. 228 $-$ 180
Gain = Rs. 48
So, the gain is Rs. 48.
