A ladder 25cm long reaches a window of a building 20m above the ground . Determine the distance of the foot of ladder from the building.
Given:
Length of ladder = 25 m
The ladder reaches a window of a building 20 m above the ground.
To find: Distance of the foot of ladder from the building
In the given figure:
Length of Ladder AB = 20 m
Height of the window BC = 25 m
We need to find AC
We can see that a right angled triangle ABC is formed.
We know,
Hypotenuse $^{2}=$ Perpendicular $^{2}+$ Base $^{2}$
$A C^{2}=A B^{2}+B C^{2}$
$25^{2}=20^{2}+B C^{2}$
$\sqrt{25^{2}-20^{2}}=B C$
$15=B C$
Hence the distance of the foot of the ladder from the building is $15 \mathrm{m}$
