(a) Define velocity. What is the SI unit of velocity ?
(b) What is the difference between speed and velocity ?
(c) Convert a speed of $54\ km/h$ into $m/s$.
(a) Velocity: Total displacement of a moving body per unit time is known as the velocity of the moving body. velocity is denoted by $v$ and its SI unit is $m/s$ or $ms^{-1}$.
$\boxed{Velocity=\frac{displacement}{time}}$
(b) Difference between speed and velocity:
Speed | Velocity |
Speed is the distance per unit of time covered by the moving body. | Velocity is the displacement per unit of time of a moving body. |
Speed is a scalar quantity. It exhibits magnitude only. | Velocity is a vector quantity. It exhibits both magnitude and direction. |
The speed of a moving body can't be zero. | The velocity of the moving body can be zero even after traveling a path. |
(c) Given speed $=54\ km/h$
$=54\times\frac{5}{18}$ [on multiplying $\frac{5}{18}$ to covert the speed into $m/s$]
$=15\ m/s$
