Course Description
Mastering good storytelling could well prove to be your key to success as a professional journalist – whether you are a freelancer or a staff reporter, or if you are just starting out.
This course delves into the secrets of winning over your readers and building a good relationship with the editor you sell your story to, or you work with if you already have a job in journalism.
As an award-winning reporter and editor with decades of experience, I have found that the skills taught here provide an edge in the competitive world of journalism. My reporting on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and on countries from India, to China, to Thailand benefited immensely from my use of good storytelling.
Mastering good storytelling – both the reporting and writing skills – will make your journey as a journalist more fulfilling. But it could also help where it matters – in getting paid and obtaining a job as a reporter. Editors like to work with journalists who submit engaging and professional work. Good storytelling could be your key to success in your journalism career. If you have been struggling to get going in journalism, this could prove the kickstart you need.

Instructor Details
Julian Gearing
Over the two decades, I have trained journalists and people completely new to reporting in how to pursue great journalism. My training draws on four decades of reporting, including interviews with the Dalai Lama, being bombed in Afghanistan, hanging out with guerrillas in northern Iraq, covering hill tribes in Thailand, having run-ins with the Mafia, covering threats to the environment, and chasing entrepreneurs for business stories. I’ve worked on both sides of the desk – as a reporter and as an editor – as well as managed news agencies. I am passionate about great storytelling and investigative reporting.
