How to restore unsaved file in Excel?


Even if Excel or your entire system crashes while you are working on something, you can still restore the file you were working on because it was not saved.

Important note

Excel's built-in AutoSave and Auto Recover functionality makes this strategy effective. You should be able to restore the files using these techniques because it is enabled by default. You must enable it if it isn't already in order to enjoy these functionalities.

Restore unsaved file in excel

Let’s understand step by step.

Step 1

Open a new Excel spreadsheet and select the File tab. Refer to the below screenshot.

Step 2

Now, click Open button as shown in the below screenshot.

Step 3

In the top-left corner, select Recent Workbook. See the screenshot below.

Step 4

At the bottom, click the Recover Unsaved Workbooks button. As shown in the below screenshot.

Step 5

Open the desired Workbook from the list of unsaved Workbooks in the dialog box that appears. Refer to the below screenshot.

If you didn't save a file above, it will be here in the unsaved files.

Step 6

You can save the file by giving it a new name and putting it in a location of your choice by using the Save As option.

Note

  • Excel saves a copy of all files that haven't been saved yet at the following location.

  • You can also go straight to this folder, where copies of Excel files that haven't been saved yet are kept, and save them in the folder of your choice.

  • When you open a file from this folder, a bar will pop up and ask you if you want to save it.

  • You can click on it and save it somewhere else.

  • Using this method, you can get back files that you made but didn't save.
